Proper Architectural Shingle Installation

Project Overview

Premium Roofing Solutions recently completed a roofing project for a home with an inadequately installed shingle system that sustained damage over a short period of time. The roof experienced multiple leaks due to improper installation and ventilation, resulting in water intrusion, wind lift in multiple areas, and nail pops. Premium Roofing Solutions identified multiple underlying issues, presented to the homeowner and executed; with these changes their issues became a thing of the past.

Key Challenges

  • Leaking Areas

Significant leaks were present in multiple areas, the shingles were improperly installed on space decking, chimney flashing was not done properly.

  • Improper Ventilation

Upon inspection of the ridge vent PRS team identified that the venting system was never installed correctly, our team identified that the decking under the ridge vent was never cut to allow for air flow, hot and humid air over time resulted in hundreds of nail pops creating multiple areas for leaks.

  • Water Damaged Decking

Several areas on the home had water intrusion resulting in rotting deck boards
    .

  • Redecking

Due to the spaces in between the spaced deck boards nails could not sufficiently snug to a nail-able surface, PRS team needed to redeck the entire structure, using approximately (185) 4’x8’ sheets of plywood.

Professional Work & Approach

  • Substrate

PRS team removed the existing shingles that were improperly nailed to the spaced deck boards, and installed over 185 sheets of OSB boards.
  • Shingles

Customer picked a quality Malarky Class 3 hail impact shingle, the industry’s first and only entry-level shingle to be constructed of polymer modified (rubberized) asphalt, making the benefits of this superior shingle technology available to all budgets.
  • Flashing

Cornice returns on the home lacked proper step flashing, PRS team identified potential problem on site during build and installed step flashing, a new custom aluminum flashing system was installed around a large natural stone chimney, requiring special equipment for grinding stone to ensure a snug fit for the custom flashing around the chimney .
  • Ventilation

Upon our initial inspection our team discovered the ridge vent was never cut properly to allow air flow to escape the roofing system. After tear off of the shingles our team cut in the proper vent width through the OSB to allow air flow and let the roof system breath and function properly.
  • Upgraded Gutters

While building out the roof system, customer suggested installing new gutters, our team went to work, measured and delivered a quote to customer within a short period of time , homeowner agreed to go with a 6” gutter system that will properly handle over 5000 square feet of roof surface and provide superior water management .

Conclusion

The Premium Team delivered an improved roofing system, by installing proper ventilation, a high-grade class 3 hail impact shingle, custom chimney flashing work, and upgraded water management gutter system. These upgraded changes provided a peach of mind leak free system that will last 30 years. The customer loved all the changes and upgrades and left our team an awesome 5-star review.
